United Arab
Emirates (UAE) qualified for the semifinals of the Inter Continental
Cup when they outplayed Malaysia by 124 runs in the match played at
the Selangor Turf Club (STC) oval near here today. Skipper Mohd Tauqir
was the pick of the ECB bowlers claiming 10 wkts in a match with 6 for
17 runs in the second innings.
The Emirates
side will now meet Canada in the
semifinals in Sharjah in November while Kenya
will meet Scotland in Abu Dhabi.
The heavyweights
from the gulf region, who three months ago won the ACC Trophy in the
Malaysian capital, once again proved their superiority with smart play
and good match application – the two factors that conspicuously were
missing from the home team.
Resuming at 162 for 3, the Emirates team lost Kashf Hussain Khan (10),
Arshad Ali (78) and Khurram Khan (16). The trio fell to superb catches
by the Malaysian boys. If that was a sign of bad things to come, then
Mohamad Taskeen was given a run out after garnering two runs.
It was evident that UAE were going for the big hits to amass a
respectable total due the dark clouds hovering in the skies that
threatened to pour as early as 10am.
The Emirates
team then eventually declared their innings at 211 for 7 after batting
for 40 minutes in the morning session. Adding to their first innings
lead of 58, the visitors left Malaysia
a target of 270 in 103 overs for a win.
Sarath
Jayawardhana (3-33) and newcomer Manrick Singh (2-56) were the toast
of the Malaysian bowlers.
With an asking
rate of 2.62 runs an over, Malaysia looked
set to trouble the UAE team when they started solidly before the first
wicket fell (that of Rohan Selvaratnam) with the score at 42.
Seventeen runs later Malaysia lost another wicket. There were signs of
another collapse, similar to that experienced in their first innings.
Play stopped at
14.35 hrs when the skies opened and Malaysia was
still on low gear as they as they had already lost six wickets with
the score at 127.
When play
resumed after rain, the Malaysian were on the “slippery” end as they
lost S. Retinam with the team total standing at 139. The digits 139
may have been a bad omen for the Malaysian as another two wickets fell
without a change in the total. Skipper Mohamad Tauqir claimed the
final wicket of the day when he had Manrick Singh caught my Ahmed
Nadeem. Mohamad Tauqir had an impressive bowling day as he begged 6
wickets conceding 17 runs. For his effort, the skipper was awarded Man
of the
Man.
The ICC
Intercontinental Cup, played in Kuala Lampur between Emirates
Cricket baord and Malaysia was evenly balanced on the first day of
the three day competition.
Malaysia, winning the toss put in ECB to bat in moist conditions.
Ramvir was the first to go for 2 while one down Kaif Ghaury followed
for 6.Arshad Ali(42) and Kashif Khan(22) put in 64 runs partnership
to take the score to 94 when Kashif Khan departed. Arshad too
departed soon as ECB were placed at 109 for 4 wkts. Khurram Khan(66)
and Syed Maqsood (41) put a brilliant partnership of 94 runs to take
the score to 202.The later batsmen while getting quick runs were out
as ECB declared at 231 for 9 wkts in the first innings in 57 overs.
Mohd Shukri bowled well for Malaysia to pick up 3 wkts for 32 runs
while Suresh,Sarath and Manrick Singh picked up 2 wkts each.
In reply Malaysia started well with Rohan Swlvaratnam (53) and
Rahesh Madhvan (48) put on an excellent opening stand partnership of
108 runs when Mohd Tauqir struck in succession. He removed both the
openers and then followed up with his third wicket to have Eszrafiq
Abd Aziz for 4. At close of play on the first day Malaysia were 125
for 3 wkts in 46 overs.
An unbeaten 74 runs
off 97 balls by UAE’s opening batsman Arshad Ali has put UAE in a
commanding position at the end of a rain shorten second day’s play of
the Inter-Continerntal Cup match between Malaysia and UAE at the
Selangor Turf Club Ground today.
Resuming at 125
runs for 3 wickets, Malaysia lost the wicket of Suresh Navartnam, off
the second over, when Ali Asad Abbas dismissed him leg before without
a run on the board.
The following over
saw Ariffin Ramly dismissed caught by Syed Maqsood at gully off Ahmed
Nadeem for a duck with the score at 126. Without addition to the
score, Ali Asad Abbas had Sarath Jayawardhana caught behind by
Mohammad Taskeen for 8, with the home team reeling at 126 for 6.
There was not much
resistance offered by the tail-end batsman other than wicket–keeper
Shanker Retinam who stayed for a while to be the last man out after
scoring 20 runs.
Malaysia
was all out for 173 in the 73rd over, conceding a 58 run
lead to UAE.
Mohamed Tauqir took
4 for 34 while Ali Asad Abbas had 3 for 65 for the visitors. Khurran
Khan chipped in with 2 for 7 and the other wicket-taker was Ahmad
Nadeem who had 1 for 30.
Batting in the
second innings, UAE had a torrid start losing opener Ramveera Rai in
the second over caught behind by Shankar Ratnam off Sarath
Jayawardhana for 1.
Arshad Ali (74 n.o.)
and Samir Zia (27) put up an 84 run partnership for the second wicket.
Kaif Ghaury then hit a breezy 36 off 41 balls with 5 fours and 2
sixes.
Rain brought a halt
shortly after tea with the score at 162 for 3 off 39.4 overs. Both
umpires S.B.Chowdhury and Md Manzur Rahman from Bangladesh officially
abandoned play at 5.30 pm with UAE in the driving seat with a
substantial lead of 220 runs. |
