Emirates Cricket Board launches U17 UAE Academy Cricket League

The Emirates Cricket Board have today officially announced the U17 UAE Academy Cricket League.

The league, which commenced play on October 8th this year, conducted in cooperation with the region’s most established cricket academies, will be played in a white-ball 30-over format and where a total of 69 matches will be played over a 6-month period.

David East, Emirates Cricket Board CEO said; “We welcome this new league and are very pleased that UAE’s prominent cricket academies support Emirates Cricket’s commitment to build the culture of cricket, through teams play home and away matches over a season-long period. This league gives each academy the responsibility of hosting their home games and providing the away team with a professional and competitive playing experience.”

This tournament forms an integral part of developing a comprehensive player pathway, in which top players can be identified and streamlined into quality, competitive cricket.  A six-month season focused on the U17’s will allow a qualitative pool of talent to be recognised ahead of  subsequent U19’s selection.

In the past, opportunities for academies to compete were only available through short individual tournaments or friendlies, organized solely by the academies, or teams themselves. This new season-long league, overseen by Emirates Cricket and fully supported by UAE’s academies, will allow players to have a solid time-frame to prepare for, and embrace the opportunity to be identified and progress to the next level. Each player’s statistics will be monitored and recorded throughout the league season.

Andrew Russell, Emirates Cricket National Development Manager added; “We are excited about the prospect of this tournament providing a platform for players to perform and be identified for higher honours. The academies are committed to this concept and have been brilliant over the opening first few games of the season. We thank them for their vision and support.”

“We anticipate that this league will bring the cricket playing community closer, and allow players to build camaraderie thus working more efficiently (as a team) to produce the country’s future stars.” added East.
